Sanding and Smoothing
Most people sand far more than they need to. The key is not in how to sand, but in how to apply the compound so that there is little or nothing left to sand. For this you might want to back-up and study the Drywall Joint Compound section.
Watch this short video to see why most pros scrape lightly but do not sand much if at all between coats of compound.
