Specialty Screws

There are a wide variety of specialty screws and we took a look at a few of the useful ones for around the house.

We tend to use drywall screws for everything, but note that they have threads that go all the way up the shank. Most woodworking and flooring screws have a smooth part to the shank just under the head to slip in the top piece of wood and draw the two pieces of wood together. So, don't use drywall screws to attach plywood to floor joists.

The photo shows a pan head sheetmetal screw which has an actual metal cutting drill right on the end of the screw. This is available at all hardware stores.

There is even a new screw called a Spax screw that has saw like teeth in the threads, allowing screwing direct into hardwood without a pilot hole. You can get this from Lee Valley Tools.
